Fraud prevention

The Internet offers businesses an amazing opportunity to sell their services to a worldwide customer base.  But it also provides an opportunity for criminals to prey on unsuspecting Internet users - and businesses operating online - for financial gain.

Criminal activities will impact Internet-facing businesses in a number of ways, the most common being chargebacks resulting from "card not present" transactions. As the "merchant of record" an online business is liable in most cases for over six months if a customer disputes a credit card transaction.  Knowing that a credit or debit card presented online by a customer is legitimate is critical to reducing exposure to fraud. We have helped many companies understand their level of exposure to such events, and through ongoing projects, changed their business practices as well as their payment flows to minimise losses.

In addition, user generated content sites that involve buyers and sellers (or creators of content and consumers of content) like online classifieds, are exposed to extremely high levels of criminal attention that manifest themselves as buy-side or sell-side frauds.  We help companies determine if an ad generated by a seller is fraudulent, or if the enquiry from a potential buyer to a seller has ill intent.

We have advised companies on developing their own technologies, practices and procedures to fight such crimes and in addition we have trusted relationships with a range of external world class fraud detection technology companies.
